Osun State Government has announced plans to introduce an advanced technology-driven security system aimed at strengthening surveillance and protecting residents, businesses and public facilities across the state.
The initiative, announced by Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration, is being developed in partnership with Hefei Shengwen Information Technology Company Limited, a Chinese technology firm.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor and representatives of the company recently held discussions to finalise details of the proposed project
The planned security system will deploy artificial intelligence-powered cameras, drones, radar technology, robotics and Internet of Things (IoT) devices to monitor activities across Osun in real time.
The system is expected to operate through a central Command and Control Centre, which will coordinate security information and surveillance activities across the state.
Schools, businesses and public spaces to be covered
The proposed project is designed to extend security monitoring to several locations, including schools, hospitals, banks, industrial facilities, farms, mining sites, commercial centres, bus parks and motor garages.
It will also incorporate a Safe School initiative and a decentralised mobile application intended to enable residents to connect with the Command and Control Centre.
Speaking on the initiative, Governor Adeleke said the project was intended to strengthen the state's capacity to protect residents, businesses and communities, including those in border areas.
He also highlighted the establishment of the Osun State Security Trust Fund as part of his administration’s broader efforts to improve security.
Mr Cai Jianfei, Director of International Operations at the Chinese company, reportedly described the proposed initiative as an integrated approach to protecting people and businesses. He also invited the governor to undertake a working visit to China.
Residents urged to remain vigilant
The proposed technology-based security initiative comes amid concerns about possible security threats in parts of South-West Nigeria.
Governor Adeleke has urged residents to promptly report suspicious movements and unfamiliar individuals to security agencies, particularly in border communities.
The call followed reports of intelligence warnings about possible terrorist movements into South-West states and concerns about potential threats ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While the state government has outlined the proposed system’s major features, further details on its implementation timeline, funding, deployment schedule and operational safeguards have not been provided in the information available.
The initiative, if implemented as announced, would represent a significant expansion of technology-assisted security monitoring across Osun State.
